Monty's Journey

My early life was heavily molded by my high school years, especially the seven years I spent as a Sea Scout at St. Mary’s College. The founder of that troop, Father Toba Valdez, remains a true hero and legend based on what he accomplished and the impact he had on thousands of lives (to this day). As a Sea Scout, we quickly learned about leadership, accountability, responsibility, and teamwork – we had no choice because we spent many hours as young boys without cell phones or any form of communication, in the open water. We didn’t know the value of what we were being taught then, but it certainly created many global leaders of industry, scientists, politicians, doctors, lawyers, engineers etc. I am eternally grateful for what I learnt during those years, the friendships created and for the leaders in their dedication to help mold our young minds; they are true Heroes.

My career started at EY Trinidad & Tobago, which laid a solid foundation due to several early mentors and coaches who had strong business and moral values. I specialized in the Energy Industry and was the first Trinidadian national to relocate to EY’s Energy, Chemical and Utilities department in London, United Kingdom, where I was responsible for coordinating and managing the global upstream external audit for BP at the age of 26 (back in the year 2001). This gave me a global perspective of business at a young age, with a significant responsibility to bear which, when I look back now, I am still surprised that anyone would even think about giving me that type of responsibility! Nevertheless, after three years in London, I returned home and eventually joined a small oil production Company called Ten Degrees North Energy Limited as its Chief Financial Officer. This Company was founded by Bruce Dingwall and Dr. Jim Lee Young, both of whom became great mentors to me in oil field operations. This Company quickly grew, and I became the Chief Executive Officer at the age of 33 years old in 2008. Through that time, I developed a deep passion to create a local multinational company, and in so doing, rebranded Ten Degrees North Energy Limited to Trinity Exploration and Production Limited. I eventually took Trinity public on the London Stock Exchange in 2013 via a reverse takeover and raising $100 million to develop the assets. This became the first Company in the history of Trinidad & Tobago to list on the London Stock Exchange (with the stock symbol “TRIN,” I couldn’t get “TRINI” because they only allowed four letters!). In 2015, I saw an opportunity to create my own independent upstream gas company, and I founded DeNovo Energy, which was a daunting experience. Nevertheless, my team, after several funding road shows was able to secure US$300 million in funding to acquire undeveloped gas reserves from Centrica PLC. We built DeNovo from scratch to become the largest indigenous oil and gas production company in Trinidad & Tobago. We also had one of the best operating and safety track records, due to the extensive use of technology.

COVID changed my view on many, many things, as it relates to business. It fundamentally changed my view on business models and what is required for businesses to be truly sustainable. This culminated in me leaving DeNovo Energy to focus on creating a truly sustainable business model, and through that journey BLEWSTREAM was born.

BLEWSTREAM is an ecosystem of businesses under one set of shared values, with a deep passion for developing people. When I first went to Nick with the concept in mid-2022, he immediately agreed (I think it took him about 5 minutes!), and I was introduced to Jimmy, who is our Executive Director/COO and instrumental for the ecosystem’s growth and development. Our business is anchored in strong relationships. Like any team we have tough conversations, and we will always start them with a laugh and say, “awkward conversation now,” and then discuss the issue openly to find a solution.

Our World is going through a challenging time, which can be daunting, but I truly believe that in safe places where powerful and meaningful conversations can be had, we can solve any challenge. BLEWSTREAM is a safe Port to have these conversations, which will lead to positive and impactful outcomes. A rising tide lifts all boats, and most importantly, our actions will speak louder than words (res non verba, the motto for the 6th Trinidad Sea Scouts).
